Semi-final line-up complete as passionate fans enjoy another day of incredible Davis Cup drama
On another electrifying day in Malaga, the 2023 Davis Cup semi-final line up was confirmed. In the first of today’s quarter-final match-ups, Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp won a dramatic encounter against Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in the first tie of the first quarter-final – saving three match points in the final set tiebreak along the way. Jannik Sinner then stepped up to level proceedings by defeating Tallon Griekspoor, before returning to court for the decisive doubles alongside Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian pair put in a flawless performance to beat Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof 6-3 6-4, propelling Italy into the semis for the second straight year.
In the opening match of the second tie, Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic scored a crucial win against Great Britain’s Jack Draper in front of a sell-out Martin Carpena arena. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic followed up with an impressive 6-4 6-4 victory over Cameron Norrie in the second singles match to secure Serbia’s place in the final four. Serbia will now take on Italy on Saturday (12pm CET).
Tomorrow, Finland and Australia will prepare to do battle for a place in Sunday’s final and the chance to be crowned World Champions. Finland have turned heads during this year’s men’s World Cup of Tennis while Australia have set their sights on going one better than last year.
