Semi-finals day at the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals
It’s all to play for on Day 5 of the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals as four nations prepare to do battle for a place in tomorrow’s final and the chance to be crowned World Champions.
Slovenia will go up against Italy at 10:00 CET. Reaching the final would be significant for Italy, who last did so in 2013 when they went on to win the most recent of their four titles. Victory today would be enormous for Slovenia, who have already made history by reaching the semi-finals for the first time.
Czechia will face Canada in the second semi-final (not before 16:00 CET) after edging past USA in a winner-takes-all Group A tie which went the distance on Friday. After Danielle Collins had put the USA 1-0 with victory over Katerina Siniakova, World No. 7 Marketa Vondrousova defeated Sofia Kenin 6-1 6-1 in the second singles match to level things up (winning her 26th consecutive set for Czechia in Billie Jean King Cup in the process). Dynamic duo Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova then joined forces to triumph 6-3 7-5 in a decisive doubles showdown against Collins and Taylor Townsend. Czechia have been here and done it many times, but such history is in stark contrast to today’s opponents Canada, who will contest just their second Billie Jean King Cup semi-final and their first since 1988.
