Palagetto, una vendemmia 2022 a San Gimignano diversa dal solito
La cantina toscana ha cominciato la raccolta già ad agosto, ma per alcune varietà la vendemmia 2022 a San Gimignano andrà avanti anche a settembre; con qualche incognita e tante certezze
“L’uva è bella, sana, in buono stato e questo è quello che conta. Ci troviamo di fronte a una vendemmia un po’ incerta nelle tempistiche e nel carico di lavoro, ma rispetto a quello che ci aspettavamo le prospettive sono notevolmente migliorate”. A raccontarci la vendemmia 2022 a San Gimignano è Arianna, proprietaria, insieme alla sua famiglia, della cantina Palagetto. Un’azienda a conduzione familiare da sempre, che ha fatto della tradizione e dell’impegno i suoi punti di forza.
Quest’anno, in periodo di vendemmia, di duro lavoro ce n’è stato – e ce ne sarà – ancora tanto. “Ma quello che poi ne scaturisce è il vero tesoro della cantina, i nostri vini – continua Arianna -. Sono loro il biglietto da visita dell’azienda e della nostra filosofia di fare vino”.
Quando inizia la vendemmia in Toscana: l’esempio di Palagetto
Palagetto è una delle cantine di San Gimignano, antico borgo a metà strada tra Siena e Firenze. Questo è il territorio dove nasce la Vernaccia (e non solo) e in cui Arianna e la sua famiglia abitano e lavorano da sempre.
“Vivendo da quando siamo nati tra vigna e cantina, abbiamo visto tante vendemmie, ma questa è davvero particolare, soprattutto per quello che riguarda i tempi – spiegano ancora dall’azienda -. Abbiamo iniziato a raccogliere le basi spumante intorno all’11 di agosto, prima rispetto agli altri anni. Anche qui da noi, come accaduto in altre parti d’Italia, si parla di una vendemmia 2022 anticipata. Tra i motivi ci sono sicuramente le alte temperature e la siccità che hanno interessato il nostro territorio per gran parte dell’estate e che ci hanno inizialmente fatto temere il peggio”.
Notizie dalla vendemmia 2022 a San Gimignano
Proprio a causa del caldo e della siccità, la vendemmia 2022 in Toscana si prospettava problematica. E San Gimignano non faceva eccezione. Poi, però, qualcosa è cambiato.
“Ci aspettavamo delle uve molto povere e soprattutto complicate da gestire, nonostante la quantità – continua Arianna -. Poi, la settimana di Ferragosto ci ha spiazzato, cambiando completamente le carte in tavola. Dopo le prime piogge, infatti, le uve rosse hanno ripreso la loro maturazione fino ad arrivare ad essere pronte i primi di settembre. È per questo che anche oggi, mentre parliamo, stiamo vendemmiando. I risultati che stiamo ottenendo per adesso sono buoni, l’uva è sana e in buono stato e questo è sempre un ottimo punto di partenza”.
Se le uve bianche sono la base per alcuni vini tipici della zona di San Gimignano– Vernaccia e non solo – quelle rosse danno vita ad altri prodotti iconici della cantina. È il caso, ad esempio del Chianti Colli Senesi, o de I’Terzo, che fa parte della collezione “I vini di Arianna”.
Una vendemmia 2022 insolita
Oltre alla data di inizio della vendemmia 2022, in anticipo rispetto al solito, la raccolta di quest’anno verrà ricordata da tutta famiglia per la sua imprevedibilità.
“Ci troviamo di fronte a qualcosa di diverso rispetto ad altre annate: un’inversione delle tempistiche di vendemmia – conclude Arianna -. Ma come succede molto spesso nel nostro lavoro, gli imprevisti sono dietro l’angolo, perciò ci siamo abituati. Se lo mettiamo a confronto con la vendemmia 2021, possiamo dire che quest’anno ci troviamo a vivere alla giornata, con poche certezze e nessun programma per impostare il lavoro. Una cosa, però, ci sta aiutando molto: è l’ottima qualità delle uve, che ci fa lavorare più agevolmente in cantina e ci riempie d’orgoglio”.
E alla fine, anche se si tratta di una vendemmia un po’ diversa, le cose che contano sono sempre le stesse per la famiglia da generazioni: passione e dedizione per ottenere un vino di qualità che ben racconti il grande impegno che c’è dietro.

“The grapes are beautiful, healthy, in good condition, and that’s what counts. We are facing a harvest that is a bit uncertain in timing and workload but compared to what we expected, the outlook has improved greatly.” Telling us about the 2022 harvest in San Gimignano is Arianna, owner, together with her family, of the Palagetto winery. It has always been a family-run business that has made tradition and commitment its strong points.
This year, at harvest time, there has been – and will be – a lot more hard work. “But what then comes out is the real treasure of the winery, our wines,” Arianna continues. “They are the true asset of the winery and of our philosophy of making wine.
When the Tuscan harvest begins: the example of Palagetto
Palagetto is one of the wineries in San Gimignano, an ancient village halfway between Siena and Florence. This is the area where Vernaccia (and more) is born and where Arianna and her family have always lived and worked.
“Living since we were born between vineyard and winery, we have seen many harvests, but this one is really special, especially in terms of timing,” the winery further explains. “We started harvesting the sparkling bases around August 11, earlier than in other years. Even here, as happened in other parts of Italy, there is talk of an early 2022 harvest. Among the reasons we have certainly the high temperatures and drought that have affected our territory for much of the summer, and that initially made us fear the worst.”
News for the 2022 harvest in San Gimignano
Precisely because of the heat and drought, the 2022 grape harvest in Tuscany was looking problematic. And San Gimignano was no exception. Then, however, something changed.
“We were expecting very poor grapes and, above all, complicated to manage, despite the quantity,” Arianna continues. “Then, the middle week of August displaced us, completely changing the situation. After the first rains, in fact, the red grapes resumed their ripening until they were ready in early September. That is why even today, as we speak, we are harvesting. The results we are getting, for now, are good, the grapes are healthy and in good condition, and that is always a good starting point.”
If white grapes are the basis for some typical wines from the San Gimignano area -Vernaccia and beyond- the red ones give rise to other iconic products of the winery. This is the case, for example, with Chianti Colli Senesi, or I’Terzo, which is part of the “Vini di Ariadne” collection.
An unusual 2022 vintage
In addition to the earlier than usual starting date of the 2022 harvest, this year’s harvest will be remembered by the whole family for its unpredictability.
“We are facing something different than in other vintages: an inversion of the harvest timing,” Arianna concludes. “But as happens very often in our work, unexpected events are around the corner, so we are used to it. If we compare it with the 2021 harvest, we can say that this year we find ourselves living by the day, with little certainty and no program to set the work. One thing, however, is helping us a lot: it is the excellent quality of the grapes, which makes us work easier in the winery and fills us with pride.”
And in the end, even if it is a slightly different vintage, the things that matter are still the same for the family, as it was for the past generations: passion and dedication to achieve a quality wine that well tells about the great commitment behind it.
